HEAD SWIM TEAM COACH
PAY: $25-35/hour DOE + Possible Season Completion Bonus
The Head Coach of the Olympic View swim team is a part-time annual position that reports to the elected Board of Trustees of Olympic View Swim Club. The Head Coach is responsible for directing, overseeing, and managing OV’s summer swim team program (approximately 170 swimmers ages 5-18) that emphasizes fun, competition, and training and competes with other Greater Seattle Summer Swim League (GSSSL) member clubs.
The ideal candidate for this position possesses a coaching philosophy that aligns with Olympic View Swim Club’s mission and values, is a team player capable of developing and maintaining positive relationships with co-workers and participants, is innovative in approach and maintains knowledge of the latest research and developments in swimming/swim coaching, strives for continuous professional development of self and staff, and has high personal and professional ethical standards.
The Head Coach manages a staff of coaches (3-6 total staff) and works in collaboration with the OVSC Board of Trustees - specifically two Swim Team coordinators that are elected by the club members. Other collaborative leadership relationships within OVSC include the General Manager, Bookkeeper, other OVSC employees and elected Board members. The Head Coach is responsible for oversight or execution of their own duties, delegating to direct reporting staff as appropriate and providing regular updates to the Board through the Swim Team Coordinators.
This position requires a willingness to work flexible and shifting hours during the summer swim season - mid-May through early August. Early season hours are estimated at 15/week from mid-May to late June. Dual meet season hours are close to 40/week from late June to late July (4-weeks). The final two weeks of the season (last week of July + first week of August) are expected to require 25 hours/week.
General Responsibilities:
- Create and promote OVSC swim team program vision, including training philosophy, practice plans, and stroke technique principles and instruction
- Oversee and coach daily practices and training programs
- Collaborate with the OVSC General Manager and Swim Team Coordinators on the Board of Trustees on all matters of scheduling, event planning, equipment, and facility needs as appropriate
- Own and manage regular and timely communication with swim team parents and guardians (face-to-face, email, communication apps, etc.); communicate meet-related deadlines and sign-ups directly to families
- In partnership with Swim Team Coordinators:
- Manage and train all coaching staff; ensure licensure and certifications of the coaching staff, and maintain certificates on-site
- Coordinate, track, and submit required certifications for all coaches and staff to the GSSSL
- Create meet entry files and oversee individual and relay team entries using Team Unify and/or Team Manager for meets to run within Meet Manager
- Serve as the primary coordinator of Olympic View Swim Club hosted swim meets, including planning, organization, preparation, and execution; conduct away meet planning in partnership with team staff and Swim Team Coordinators
- Attend swim meets; act as team lead in supervising athletes at meets
- Attend all practices; act as team lead in supervising athletes and assistant coaches at practices
- Afternoon/Evening practices from late May to end of school year.
- Morning practices from end of school year until first week of August
- Ensure adequate participation of staff and volunteers to effectively operate swim meets; collaborate with the Swim Team Coordinators to secure and train specialized volunteer roles (meet officials, timing system operators, etc.)
- Partner with Swim team Coordinators to plan swim team social events
- Work with coaching staff to ensure program is cohesive and successful among all groups
- Provide educational information to parents and families
- Organize and conduct annual swim team orientation event and end-of-season awards banquet including awards
Required Qualifications and Training:
- A passion for swimming and coaching with a minimum of five years of experience coaching competitive swimmers in a leadership role
- Experience directing swim team activities at swimming pools (1-2 seasons), including supervising personnel
- Two years of college-level coursework or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience, including or supplemented by courses in swimming and lifesaving
Must have and maintain current certifications in the following:
- Lifeguard certification
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Safesport certification (US Center for Safesport)
- All certifications required by GSSSL for coaching staff
- Experience as a lifeguard and swimming instructor (1-3 seasons)
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and handle multiple duties at once
- Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate in a positive and direct manner
- Experience with Google office applications, Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with Team Manager, Meet Manager, and Team Unify
Compensation:
- Salary is based on experience and qualifications
- Season completion bonus is possible if the coach completes the season and stays within allotted coaching hours and to be determined following annual team banquet
